How to Build a Healthier Morning Routine

In this episode, Dr. Jae ho Roh from Revive Chiropractic in Sunnyvale breaks down why your morning routine has a bigger impact on your health than you might think. Even if your mornings feel rushed, small intentional changes in those first twenty to thirty minutes can set the tone for how your body performs throughout the day. Dr. Jae ho Roh offers practical, chiropractor-approved strategies that don’t require a complete schedule overhaul. Whether you’re dealing with stiffness, low energy, or just looking to feel better day to day, this episode is a great starting point.

Hey everyone, welcome back. I’m Doctor Jae Ho Roh from Revive Chiropractic here in Sunnyvale, and today we’re talking about something that can genuinely change the way you feel every single day. Your morning routine.

Now I know what you might be thinking. “Doctor Roh, I barely have time to drink my coffee before I’m out the door.” I hear that all the time. But here’s the thing — the first twenty to thirty minutes of your morning can either set your body up for a great day, or they can set you up for tension, stiffness, and fatigue before you even get to work. And today I want to give you some simple tools to make sure it’s the first option.

Let’s start with what’s happening to your body while you sleep. When you’re lying down for seven or eight hours, your spinal discs actually rehydrate. They absorb fluid overnight. That’s why you’re technically a little taller in the morning than you are at night. Pretty cool, right? But it also means your spine is in a different state when you wake up. Your muscles are stiff, your joints need time to warm up, and jumping straight into your day without giving your body a moment to transition — that’s where a lot of people run into trouble.

So here’s the first thing I want you to do. Before you even get out of bed, take sixty seconds to gently move. Pull your knees to your chest slowly. Let your lower back stretch out. Rock side to side just a little. Nothing aggressive, nothing painful — just easy, gentle movement to wake up your spine. Think of it like warming up your car on a cold morning. You wouldn’t floor it right away. Same idea with your body.

Now the second thing — and this one is huge — is hydration. Most of us wake up mildly dehydrated because we haven’t had water in eight or so hours. And your spinal discs, your joints, your muscles — they all depend on water to function well. So before the coffee, drink a full glass of water. Just one glass. It sounds simple because it is simple, but the difference it makes in how your joints feel within the first hour of your morning is real.

Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of the patients I see with chronic neck and shoulder tension — they’re spending the first hour of their morning hunched over their phone or their laptop before their muscles have even had a chance to properly wake up. That forward head posture, that rounding of the shoulders — when you do it first thing in the morning while your muscles are still stiff, you’re basically training your body to hold that position. So try to keep your head up and your screen at eye level, especially in those early hours.

The third piece I want you to think about is movement. You don’t need a full workout routine first thing in the morning. I’m talking about five to ten minutes of gentle stretching or walking. A short walk outside — even just around the block — gets your blood moving, wakes up your nervous system, and helps your spine decompress from the night. If walking isn’t an option, some light stretching for your hips, your hamstrings, and your upper back can make a noticeable difference in how you carry yourself throughout the day.

Now here’s when I’d encourage you to come see us. If you wake up stiff every single morning and it takes more than an hour to feel like yourself — that’s worth getting evaluated. If you’ve got persistent neck pain, low back pain, or headaches that seem to start in the morning — don’t just push through it and hope it goes away. That pattern usually means something in your spine needs attention. That’s exactly what we’re here for.

At Revive Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. Your posture, your movement patterns, your spinal alignment — and we work with you to build a plan that actually fits your life. Whether you’re dealing with something specific or you just want to feel better and move better, we’d love to see you.

So here’s your takeaway for today. Do sixty seconds of gentle movement before you get out of bed. Drink a glass of water before anything else. And protect your posture in that first hour. Small changes, done consistently, add up to a really big difference.
