Chiropractic and Lower Back Injuries: Why Rest Alone Isn’t Enough

In this episode, Dr. Jae ho Roh from Revive Chiropractic in Sunnyvale addresses a common misconception about lower back pain recovery. Many patients come in after weeks of rest, expecting their pain to simply disappear on its own.

Dr. Roh explains why passive rest isn’t typically enough to heal lower back injuries and what active interventions, including chiropractic care, can offer for lasting relief and recovery.

If you’ve been dealing with persistent lower back pain, this episode will help you understand why movement and proper treatment matter more than waiting it out.

Hey there, this is Doctor Jae ho Roh from Revive Chiropractic here in Sunnyvale. Thanks for tuning in today.

So, let’s talk about something I hear almost every single day in the office. Someone comes in with lower back pain, and they tell me they’ve been resting for weeks… hoping it would just go away. And honestly? I get it. When your back hurts, your first instinct is to take it easy, right? Stay on the couch, avoid movement, wait it out.

But here’s the thing. Rest alone usually isn’t enough. And sometimes, too much rest can actually make things worse.

Now, don’t get me wrong. If you’ve just injured your back, a day or two of rest can be helpful. Your body needs a chance to calm down that initial inflammation. But after that? Staying inactive can lead to stiffness, muscle weakness, and something we call compensatory patterns. That’s when other parts of your body start working overtime to protect the injured area… and then those parts start hurting too.

Your spine is designed to move. The discs between your vertebrae get their nutrition from movement. When you stop moving, those discs don’t get the fluid exchange they need. Your muscles start to tighten up and lose strength. And the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to get back to normal.

So what should you do instead? Well, that’s where chiropractic care comes in. When you come see us at Revive Chiropractic, we’re not just looking at your symptoms. We’re figuring out why your lower back got injured in the first place. Is it a misalignment? Muscle imbalance? Poor movement patterns? Maybe something at your workstation that’s putting stress on your spine day after day?

We use gentle adjustments to restore proper alignment and mobility to your spine. This helps reduce pain, yes… but it also helps your body heal the right way. We combine that with specific exercises and stretches designed for your particular injury. Not generic stuff you find online. Movements that target exactly what you need.

And here’s what I want you to remember. Healing isn’t passive. Your body does an amazing job repairing itself, but it needs the right environment and the right movement to do it well.

If you’re dealing with lower back pain right now, here’s my advice. Start with gentle movement. Walking is fantastic. Even just ten or fifteen minutes can help. Avoid sitting for long periods. If you work at a desk, stand up and move around every thirty minutes or so. And please, don’t ignore pain that lasts more than a few days.

That’s when you should come see us. We’ll do a thorough evaluation, figure out what’s really going on, and create a plan to get you back to doing what you love without that nagging pain holding you back.

Lower back injuries respond really well to chiropractic care, especially when we catch them early. So don’t wait until it’s unbearable. Let’s work together to get you feeling better.

Thanks so much for listening today. If you’re in the Sunnyvale area and you need help with back pain, give us a call at Revive Chiropractic. We’re here to help you get moving again. Take care, and I’ll talk to you next time.
